H2O Canoe Company Boundary 17/6 Review
The Boundary 17/6 can simply be summed up as the Prospector of asymmetrical canoes. With its shallow arched hull and keel-less design, the Boundary 17/6 is highly maneuverable despite its long length. At 17/6 in length and with a 34 inch beam, it is also a stable craft – even more so than H2O’s Prospector models!
“The Boundary 17/6 handles like a small boat but gives you all the benefits of performance and capacity of a larger cruiser. The campfire is already cookin’ for folks who live for extended trips and want a boat that can match their desires!”
By incorporating a moderate amount of rocker in the bow combined with flared ends, the Boundary 17/6 excels in big water situations as it lifts up and over waves as opposed to crashing through them. The depth of the bow also allows the canoe to shed more water away from the boat making a much drier ride in rougher conditions.
As the most versatile boat in H2O’s asymmetrical series of canoes, the Boundary 17/6 is a great choice for paddles who want a ‘does everything well’ canoe with a little more speed and efficiency than a traditional, symmetrical boat. Beyond that, the Boundary’s size lends itself to families and groups that want to limit the number of boats needed to take on an extended camping trip – the Boundary 17/6 is a pack horse that can take all your gear including the kitchen sink!
Being an old school canoeist out of the 1970’s school of tripping, I was suspect of how an ultralight canoe could stand up to the back-country. No gel coat? Only 38 lbs? I needed a boat we could use! What can I say, I’ve been schooled. Our new boat is really tough. On our first trip to Algonquin North in early October we caught a rock in swift water that left me very concerned. The boat on the other hand shrugged it off as nothing.
Can a boat be too fast? The Boundary is a rocket, even fully loaded with 9 days worth of tripping gear. In similar conditions and with similar gear weight, we found ourselves travelling 1/3 times faster than our Swift. We started to joke about the short paddles between portages. The light weight of the canoe made portaging a breeze. It was easy to do one-carry portages, as shouldering a heavy pack in conjunction with the canoe was not an issue. What amazed us most was that all this was achieved without compromising maneuverability!
