Current Designs Suka Kayak 16/6 Review
Current Designs Suka Kayak (pronounced “Sue-ka” – Inuit for “Swift”) is the smallest member of Current Designs ‘Greenland Style’ family of kayaks, which also includes the mid-sized Caribou 17/3 and huge Isle 18.
CD’s Suka is specifically designed for ‘smaller’, slimmer hipped paddlers with ‘intermediate’ or beyond’ skills. Current Designs Suka successfully emulates the distinctive hard-chnned features of skin-on-frame ‘Greenland’ kayaks created by the Inuit & Aleut people’s 4,000- years ago.
“Current Designs Suka Kayak 16/6 provides small paddlers a lightweight, and lively kayak that fits perfectly. The Suka promises really big smiles to a wide range of paddler abilities – novice, intermediate to advanced!”
The Current Designs Suka Kayak combines a smaller cockpit and fixed thigh braces with a lower bow deck height and narrow seat to create an exceptional “one-with-boat feeling” seldom achieved for petite paddlers. The cockpit still offers plenty of room for easy entry & exit for appropriately sized paddlers. All CD’s British & Greenland style kayaks are fitted with the popular Immersion Research® Reggie back band that adjusts easily with a ratchet system to provide comfortable lower back support.
Our review team loved the traditional, sleek and uncluttered profile of the Current Designs Suka Kayak. The kayak’s overall finish is impressive. Flush mount composite hatch covers have an interior male & female connection, which when secured with the 3- cam strap buckles provides an extremely watertight seal. Two translucent curved bulkheads provide dry storage and aid in draining water from the cockpit. SEA-LECT® footbraces adjust simply and the recessed fittings, skeg control slider and deck rigging is all well placed.
Kayak Efficiency & Maneuverability
The kayak’s narrow shallow Vee hull is extremely efficient. Acceleration is rapid to a good touring pace and is easily maintained due to its effortless glide. The sleek shear line and low foredeck of the Current Designs Suka Kayak sheds water effectively and virtually eliminates weathercocking in rough, windy conditions, so we never used the skeg. Slightly softened hard chine sides inspire confident, nimble turns as the Suka holds its edge so easy… it almost feels like cheating.
Novice paddlers will love the Current Designs Suka’s ‘high’ level of initial stability provided by the well-defined edges from its hard chinned sides. The flat sections of the chine were made slightly convex to mitigate the transition from paddling hull down flat to a ‘very good’ secondary stability point on edge.
Kayak Roll & Rescue
The Current Designs Suka Kayak rolls easily. A slightly higher rear deck allows for more storage capacity but may interfere with shorter paddlers’ layback rolls. Smaller paddlers won’t experience any difficulty with wet exits, and the rear bulkhead is placed close to the combing allowing the cockpit to drain effectively. We do suggest Self-rescue straps be installed to aid with a paddle-float reentry for all sea kayaks unless your roll is 100% reliable in all conditions.
