Wilderness Systems Pungo 120 Ultralite Kayak Review
Wilderness Systems Pungo 120 Ultralite is a recreation of the original polyethylene version only 20% lighter &, stiffer, with a more glossy and vibrant finish! The Pungo series from Wilderness Systems is considered the best selling recreational kayak ever created, and now they’ve gotten even better.
The secret to overwhelming success of Wilderness Systems Pungo 120 Ultralite is attributed to its fantastic design & superior material. It provides recreational kayakers with an an impressive combination of stability, tracking with reasonable efficiency. The innovative multi-chined hull provides an extremely stable platform, which inspires confidence in beginners and novice paddlers alike. Capsizing by accident is virtually impossible as the flared sides create very secure initial and secondary stability points, while the full-length keel and multi-chined sides combined with sharp ends to further enhance efficiency and tracking (the ability to paddle straight). Lastly its full bow helps drive the bow over waves rather than plowing into them.
Constructed from a light and stiff ABS plastic known as thermoform, the Wilderness Systems Pungo 120 Ultralite maximizes glide as there is less flex in the hull. Not only is efficiency improved in the ultralite model, but it is a full 9 lbs lighter than the poly version! Loading, unloading, and carrying the Pungo 120 to your launch has never been easier .
As with the original model, the Wilderness Systems Pungo 120 Ultralite features a large, easy-entry cockpit. Matter of fact, it’s one of the biggest cockpits that still accommodates a spray skirt to stay dry. A precision SlideLock™ XL footbrace system and innovative Orbix™ turn and lock hinged stern hatch with rear bulkhead create watertight dry storage and added buoyancy. However, unlike the poly version, the Pungo 120 Ultralite does not include Wilderness Systems’ Kayak Konsole™, but the accessory can be purchased on its own if desired.
The Wilderness Systems Pungo 120 Ultralite still includes the amazing Phase 3 AirPro seating system, widely considered to be the kayak industries finest. Its multi-adjustable ergonomic elements includes a backrest that adjusts up or down, a seat pan that can be raised or lowered to eliminate leg stress. The entire seat system incorporates a wicking material that naturally drains moisture away from the paddler. Padded knee braces complete the system.
“Wilderness Systems Pungo 120 Ultralite is a must try before you buy any other recreational kayak. It’s exceptionally well designed, outfitted, and incredibly light; it offers outstanding value not normally found in most kayaks in its category”
