Tahe Reval Midi Kayak 17/1 Review
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to grab one of these exquisitely designed European Craft from Canada’s Tahe & Zegul Kayaks Experts!
The slender, graceful lines of the Tahe Reval Midi Kayak accurately depict its exceptional performance. As the middle boat in the Reval series that also includes the smaller Reval Mini LC and the larger Reval HV, the Midi is a kayak that simply does everything extremely well. Fast, efficient and playfully maneuverable, the Midi still retains enough initial stability to satisfy newcomers. The Midi is also an ideal choice for medium & large paddlers with intermediate to advanced skills and those adrenaline Junkies seeking a quality lifetime performance oriented British style sea kayak.
The cockpit design is simple and robust on the Tahe Reval Midi Kayak. It features an adjustable backband, padded seat pan and sculpted padded thighbraces that are positioned correctly. Footbraces are adjustable and can easily fit larger feet. The fore-decks contoured sides better enable shorter paddlers to comfortably maintain a low angle paddle stroke.
New for 2017, the Tahe Reval Midi has been upgraded with a multi-adjustable back rest to further improve the paddler’s fit. The back rest is manually adjusted using a nut & bolt system that offers virtually unlimited customization. It takes some time to hone in your perfect fit and the back rest cannot be adjusted on the water. However, once you’ve got it placed exactly where it’s needed, you’ll appreciate the comfort that’s provided!
Kayak Efficiency & Maneuverability
Our Paddling Team’s first impression was how quietly the Tahe Reval Midi Kayak sliced through the water. The very quick touring pace of the Midi is achieved through a long sleek waterline. Its knife like bow cuts the water at its finest point unlike less efficient kayaks which encounter the water at a point further back causing them to plow. The hull design of the Midi has incorporated a moderate rocker with a slightly up-swept bow & stern that aids in handing challenging water conditions easier. The Tahe Midi tracks far better than most, even with the skeg up and is only prone to the slightest weathercocking. Considered it’s a soft chine kayak, the Midi has a definite secondary flat spot on the side, which creates a stable, predictable platform for quick responsive turns & endless edging.
We rate the Tahe Reval Midi’s initial stability as ‘high’ due to the combination of its shallow Vee hull and its long waterline. Secondary stability is also rated as ‘high’ due to the slight flattening of the sides.
Kayak Roll & Rescue
Quality cockpit contact points ensure easy rolling yet I found the rear deck height impeded a comfortable layback roll. The backband relaxes so as not to interfere with rolls, wet exits or entries. Unless your 100% confident in your roll we suggest you let our expert staff custom install a pair of ‘Quick Release Self Rescue Straps’ to expedite paddlefloat reentry.
The good news about the Tahe Reval Midi Kayak higher rear deck is that it increases the gear capacity for extended trips. We have rated gear capacity at 7.5, which is good when one remembers the Midi 17/1 is only 21.25 inches wide. Cruising speed is quickly achieved and is easily maintained even when fully loaded. Its up-swept bow & stern effectively shed water but expect a somewhat wet ride in rough water conditions. Bungee deck rigging is adequate, however ideally we would have liked ‘a tad’ more to better secure top deck gear!
