Tandem Kayaks
Tandem or Double Kayaksenable paddlers to share experiences together within the same craft, except tandem kayakers sit much lower "in-the-water", thus they are far more stable, and are much less affected by big wind & waveconditions.
There are 2- Distinct Types of tandem kayaks to consider:
1) Tandem 'Sea Kayaks': Longer and leaner than other doubles Tandem Sea Kayaks exude on water efficiency. Tandem sea kayaks always include both bow and stern hatches with sealed bulkheads, which keep gear dry as well as providing additional floatation, thus higher safety. Smaller cockpits enable spray skirts to be attached, which keeps water out and heat in, to keep paddlers warm and dry... even in the rain! Tandem Sea Kayaks offer a very high degree of stability through length and increased capacity to satisfy day trips and long excursions and can handle virtually 'any water conditions' with reasonable kayaking skills.
'Sea Kayak' Materials: Composite materials like fibreglass and Kevlar are GREAT choices for Tandem Sea Kayaks. Conversely Polyethylene is often a POOR material choice for tandem sea kayaks as it makes them very heavy; this combined with being soft tends to distort the longer wider 'Poly' tandem shapes more quickly.
Note: We will ‘NOT' stock or recommend purchasing polyethylene tandem sea kayaks for the above-mentioned reasons.
2) Tandem 'Recreational Kayaks' & Sit-on-Tops: Shorter, wider and with a much larger, open style cockpit area Recreational Doubles are distinctly differentin appearance than tandem sea kayaks. Recreational tandems are designed for more general multi-purpose, family, kids and cottage types of day pursuits. These kayaks often do 'NOT' include bow or stern hatches or sealed bulkheads and the cockpit area is large so it will hold more water. The stern seat is usually on a sliding system so the seat can be easily moved foreword or backward to optimize solo paddling and best trim the boat. Spray skirts are 'NOT' an option as the cockpit opening is simply too large to fit a skirt and still disperse water properly. Recreational kayaks and sit-on-tops provide a fun way to get to people out in 'calm protected waters'.
'Recreational Kayak' Materials: Virtually 'ALL' Recreational kayaks today are made from roto-molded Polyethylene as its tough, requires little maintenance and is the least expensive.
