1000 ISLANDS ADMIRALTY TOUR: 1- Day Leisure Trip

The 1000 Islands “Admiralty Islands Group” is where our gentle sea kayak trip both begins and ends. It is the most westerly group of islands in the St. Lawrence National Park. Blessed with incredible beauty and rich in history the native people called the 1000 Islands the “Garden of the Great Spirit”. Today the 1000 Islands region is recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (1 of only 12 celebrated sites in Canada). The emerald waters, innumerable channels and 1865 islands are part of St. Lawrence Islands National Park, (Canada’s fifth oldest and smallest National Park).

Shorter in length and much more forgiving than our other 1000 Islands trip, the Admiralty Islands kayak tour begins with a launch from the sandy beach front of our “family farm” just west of Gananoque. Protected by Howe Island we paddle the Bateau Channel easterly into the Admiralty Islands Group just off Gananoque. We then slowly wind our way past pristine St. Lawrence National Park Islands like; Aubrey, Mermaid and Beaurivage. While exploring the 1000 Islands Region’s unparalleled beauty we’ll discuss it's history, ecology, and its romantic stories while practicing your kayak skills with our skilled and patient instructors. We visit “Half Moon Bay” on the southeast end of Bostwick Island. As the name implies, the bay’s shape is like that of a crescent moon surrounded by granite cliffs. It was created by rushing torrents of water half a billion years ago. Islanders have boated to this unique and holy place for Sunday church services since 1887. Soon after we make an open-water crossing to Thwartway Island, or Leek Island as its locally known. This “natural island” has no pathways or trails as it has been left as a wildlife sanctuary. Here we stop for a leisurely lunch and relax on its beautiful sandy beaches and swim in it’s crystal clear water’s. We finish our kayak trip around 4:pm for an optional gathering for a cold drink and some great food (your cost) at the famous waterfront Gananoque Inn
