2010 Rideau Canal - Discover Day Tour

The Rideau Canal is a 126-mile / 202-km waterway connecting Lake Ontario's Kingston to Ottawa, our Nation's Capital. The waterway route was the creation of Britain's Lieutenant Colonel John By in the wake of the U.S. / Canada War of 1812 as a wartime supply route alternative to the international boundary of the St. Lawrence River. It's 47 locks; blockhouses and dams are considered one of the greatest engineering feats of the 19th century. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) declared the Rideau Canal System a "World Heritage Site" in 2007. 

Our Rideau Canal kayak tour concentrates on the routes most scenic 12-km stretch from historic Jones Falls to beautiful Chaffey's Locks!

Your adventure begins at the historic 60' high dam at Jones Falls, but not before first exploring this beautiful locations 4- lockstations, steeped in history. Along the way we will
describe the workers sacrifices and the difficulties engineer's experienced, while building this spectacular waterway. As we pass our way through several small lakes you will have a chance to watch the excitement of pleasure boaters passing through the old historic locks. Our leisurely paddle generally keeps us far away from the mainstream boat traffic as we remain in protected waters. The quaint and picturesque Davis Lock is the ideal place to stop to have lunch and use their facilities. After a relaxing lunch and brief portage we continue kayaking across Opinicon Lake to our destination at Chaffey's Locks. As we load up boats & gear for the return shuttle to Jone's Falls, Your welcome to explore the charming and historic Chaffey's Locks to see the sights.

Rideau Canal - History in brief:

An historic chain of beautiful lakes, rivers, canals 47- locks at 22- lock stations connects 202- km (126 miles) of waterways. Beginning at Kingston (Canada's original capital) at the head of Lake Ontario in the south, extending north to Ottawa, Canada's capital city. Conceived in the wake of the War of 1812, the Rideau Canal was built to secure a wartime water supply route for troops and supplies to protect Canada against possible attack from the United States. Built from 1826 to 1832, the Rideau Canal is considered one of the greatest engineering marvels of the 19th century. Today the Rideau Canal System is the worlds oldest operating lock system and has received UNESCO World Heritage Designation (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) 

Our Sea Kayak Tour:

Explore's the Canals most beautiful 12- km section of rugged Canadian Shield from the beautiful Jones Falls Lock station (Horse shoe dam) ending at Chaffey's Locks. Pristine lock stations along the way provide washroom facilities as well as making perfect places to stretch your legs and just hang out. This great trip combines the route's natural beauty, stories, humour, with Frontenac Outfitters skilled and patient kayak instructors... all in a relaxed, fun group environment

How to book:
Class dates & size are limited and tend to book up quickly. To sign up please refer to our online registration package. Courses run rain or shine.

Prerequisite:
No Sea Kayaking experience required, minimum - 6 participants required!

What we provide each paddler: 
Brand new high quality sea kayak & Paddling Gear, which includes; 
a  kayak paddle, spray skirt, new PFD, pump, paddle float, paddle leash, whistle, throw bag, instructor's certification and 25- Years Kayaking Expertise

Stuff 'YOU' should bring:
* Wide brimmed sun hat
* Sunglasses (we sell eyeglass holders & floaters)
* Sunscreen & lip balm (waterproof)
* Bathing suit, shorts & towel
* T-shirt, light long-sleeve shirt, shorts, undergarments
* Raincoat, paddling jacket & sweater (should conditions apply)
* Water shoes or sandals
* Water Bottle (1 - litre minimum)
* Lunch & snacks like energy bars, gorp
* Money for shopping

Course Cost:

  • $120.00 + 13% HST = $142.38 (no discount for using your kayak)

Cancellation Policy:
Cancellation for any reason within a 14- day period immediately prior to the course/clinic will result in a forfeiture of the full amount of the course or clinic unless a suitable replacement can be found in which case we will refund your fee minus an administration charge of $20.00.
Frontenac Outfitters reserves the right to cancel or reschedule any course or clinic due to inclement weather or lack of participation
