Boreal Design Storm 15 Kayak Review
In 2017 Boreal Design released the Storm 15 kayak which is the smallest in their performance touring series that includes the mid-sized Storm 16 and larger Storm 17 models. The Storm 15, or what we’ve dubbed the Storm 15XS (extra small), provides the best fit for small paddlers (100 lbs – 160 lbs) and caters to beginners with aspirations or those with intermediate to advanced skills.
The Boreal Design Storm 15 comes standard with Boreal’s new ‘Flex Five Seat’, which offers five points of adjustment to optimize contact giving you the perfect fit. The Flex Five seat system includes ample padding for more comfort, and the ‘Dry Tech’ material allows the seat to dry quickly when wet.
Boreal’s add-on thigh braces offer complete customization for each paddler to improve bracing and control, while easy to adjust Smart Track foot pedals offer a flexible fit for long-legged and short-legged paddlers alike.
Kayak Efficiency & Maneuverability
The Storm 15, 16, and 17 incorporate the same shallow vee hull design. However, the Boreal Design Storm 15 offers a the highest degree of responsiveness due to its shorter waterline.
The sharp bow and narrow beam slices the water effectively for quick acceleration and a good cruising speed that’s achieved easily. With the shallow vee hull, the Storm 15 tracks (the ability to paddle straight) well without the skeg being deployed despite being shorter in length. In adverse conditions lowering the skeg noticeably improves tracking even further, but there is a slight sacrifice to speed and maneuverability.
The Boreal Design Storm 15 sits solidly on the reverse chined sides for confident edging and an even higher degree of maneuverability. This inspires confidence in novice paddlers as it will enable them to refine their skills more easily, while more advanced paddlers will enjoy the responsiveness of the Storm 15.
A shallow vee hull, moderate rocker, reverse chine, and customizable fit combine to provide a high degree of initial stability. The flattened sides of the kayak also give secondary stability a high rating.
Kayak Roll & Rescue
The lower deck height of the Boreal Design Storm 15 provides great contact for controlled rolls or assisted Eskimo rescues. A flat rear deck provides a great platform for reentries and quick-release, self-rescue straps come standard.
Well placed curved bulkheads maximize strength and storage space, while minimizing the amount of water coming in into the cockpit area. The add-on thigh braces let paddlers customize their fit to provide the total control needed to successfully ‘hip-flick’ and roll the kayak back upright.
“The Boreal Design Storm 15 is a touring kayak that offers the best fit for smaller paddlers without having to pad in the cockpit. Petite paddlers rejoice as they finally have a kayak that was designed specially for them!”
