Polyethylene Kayaks ~ a Brief History

Plastic, Tupperware and Poly are some of the slang terms commonly used to describe roto-mold Polyethylene Kayaks. Polyethylene is currently the most common material used to manufacture kayaks today. ‘Poly kayaks’ have been around since the mid-1970’s and is the least expensive material available to mass produce kayaks.

A polyethylene powder is poured into a mold, which is sealed, and then rotates on several axis in an oven to melt the polyethylene consistently throughout the mold. Now visualize up to eight molds extending outwards ‘like the spokes from a bicycle wheel’. The wheel spins, and the molds rotate IE.: the name roto-mold polyethylene kayaks. Computer Controlled Programs called CAD programs correspond to each individual kayak model, and its colour with an individual ‘cook temperature’. Polyethylene  is an extremely fast an efficient kayak manufacturing process. The average build time being only 30 to 40 minutes to produce a kayak shell.

Once removed from the oven a polyethylene kayaks cooling process is crucial. This is because a high-density polyethylene kayak can shrink as much as 8- inches. Slow cooling at an ambient temperature prevents warping and distortion. Quality manufacturers will also add UV- inhibitors to the build process to better preserve a kayaks colour and finish. UV inhibitors also impede warping should a craft be exposed to prolonged sunlight and heat.

Polyethylene kayaks are not as stiff or rigid as more expensive thermoform or composite kayaks. This lack of stiffness creates drag on the water. This in-turn lessens a poly kayaks performance. Polyethylene kayaks finish finish is also not as vibrant or visually appealing as a thermoform or composite kayaks.

So what’s SO GOOD about roto-mold polyethylene Kayaks!Polyethylene Kayaks

“That’s EASY! Polyethylene kayaks provide a robust and inexpensive introduction to the sport of kayaking. Poly kayaks cost about 50% less than equivalent fibreglass kayaks & 30% less than equivalent thermoform kayaks. Who knew”
