Zegul Velocity Kayak Review
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to grab one of these exquisitely designed European kayaks from Canada’s Tahe & Zegul Kayak experts!
The Zegul Velocity kayak is a new addition to our Performance Touring Kayaks for 2018 and is easily the fastest boat in our entire shop!
The Velocity is a sporty kayak that has been optimized for speed and efficiency making it the perfect choice for racing, fitness paddling, or simply to make those long crossings as quickly as possible. Geared towards intermediate to advanced paddlers weighing around 130 lbs – 220 lbs, the Velocity has a generous fit range and the additional volume allows it to be packed for extended trips.
Unlike other boats in its category, the Zegul Velocity kayak has slightly increased width in order to improve stability in big water situations or to inspire beginners who want to push themselves to the next level.
The Zegul Velocity kayak best fits medium- to large-sized paddlers who appreciate the controlled fit that’s achieved with a 21.25″ beam and 32.25″ x 16.5″ cockpit. The added length to the cockpit makes entering the kayak easier for long-legged paddlers, while the deck height is shallow enough to not interfere with a low angle paddle stroke.
In terms of a seating system, most European designs follow the concept of simplicity rules. This means you won’t get an innovative, multi-adjustable and thick-padded seat that’s found in many North American boats. However, you will find an ergonomic and robust seat system that thankfully has everything correctly placed.
A contour back band provides full range of motion and includes several nut & bolt adjustment points allowing you to hone in on perfect support. Intuitive slidelock foot braces combined with multi-adjustable thigh braces offer the perfect contact points required for rapid skills progression.
Kayak Efficiency & Maneuverability
At 18’5″, the Zegul Velociy kayak has incredible glide and blazing speed with sharp entry points and a long waterline. The added volume in the bow of the kayak helps shed water away from the kayak to improve handling in challenging conditions
Similar to most kayaks of its length, the Velocity is prone to slight weather-cocking in adverse conditions, but the rudder / skeg combo gives you the versatility to maintain course in any situation. Less resistance is created with the shallow arched hull to increase responsiveness and reduce resistance to forward momentum.
As a long, relatively narrow performance kayak with a slightly round hull, the Zegul Velocity purposely forsakes a degree of initial stability in order to optimize maneuverability. However being 18’5″, stability is gained through length of the kayak to instill confidence in aspiring paddlers.
Soft chine sides of the Velocity kayak offers predictable secondary stability, while the arched hull provides seamless transitions from edge to edge. However it takes more control and paddler skill in order to maintain edging needed for nimble turns.
Kayak Roll & Rescue
Wet entries and exits are done easily with the flat rear deck of the Zegul Velocity kayak. The deck rigging and day hatch are well placed to provide the perfect platform for self-rescues – we suggest adding quick-release, self-rescue straps to speed up reentry.
The controlled fit of the Zegul Velocity kayak offers great contact points needed for efficient rolls with proper technique, and the low rear deck makes for instinctive lay-back rolls. That said, those new to rolling may find the Velocity difficult at first given its length.
The Zegul Velocity kayak accelerates quickly and has an easily maintained cruising pace due to its long waterline and streamlined design. The flared, full-bodied bow improve handling in big water making expeditions with long crossings quick and efficient.
Three hatch compartments and a centre day pod provide a generous amount of gear capacity for extended trips or just a weekend getaway. The lightweight hatch covers click on and off easily in cold water and are built in conjunction with the rims for a watertight seal.
Full perimeter lining along with ample deck rigging offer additional gear capacity using mounted deck bags and other storage accessories.
